A Weekend in Phnom Penh: Where Culture Meets Adventure

Phnom Penh is a city that knows how to keep things interesting. Whether you’re a local looking for something fresh or a visitor eager to soak up the city’s energy, there’s plenty to explore. From historic landmarks to lively street performances, here’s your guide to making the most of your time in Cambodia’s capital.

Must-See Attractions

Start your journey with a visit to the Royal Palace, where golden rooftops gleam under the sun. Right next door, the Silver Pagoda houses stunning Buddhist treasures, including a floor made entirely of silver tiles. If history is your thing, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Choeung Ek Killing Fields offer a sobering but important look into Cambodia’s past.

For a more relaxed vibe, take a stroll through Wat Phnom, the city’s namesake temple perched on a small hill. Or, if you’re craving a little retail therapy, the Russian Market and Central Market are packed with everything from souvenirs to street food and everything in-between.

Riverside Walking Street: A Weekend Favorite

Every Saturday and Sunday from 6 pm to 11 pm Phnom Penh’s riverside transforms into a pedestrian-friendly cultural hub. Stretching from Street 94 near Paschim Chamkorn to the front of the Royal Palace, this initiative turns a bustling road into a lively space filled with Khmer music, dance performances, circus acts, and even mobile libraries. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the city’s creative energy while enjoying a sunset stroll.

Live Entertainment at The Box Office

If you’re in the mood for a night out, The Box Office is the place you are looking for.  Only a short walk from the Royal Palace this British-owned venue is more than just a pub – it’s a hotspot for live performances. Expect weekly comedy shows, live music, and even puppet performances that bring a unique flair to the city’s entertainment scene.

One standout event is the Excel-themed comedy show by David Benaim, blending humor with unexpected storytelling – check out the latest review here (https://www.phnompenhpost.com/arts-culture/self-proclaimed-sheet-head-brings-house-down-in-excel-lent-performance)

If you’re looking for something more interactive, keep an eye out for their all-you-can-eat steak nights every Wednesday from 5pm followed by live Comedy at 7.30 courtesy of the Comedy in Cambodia StandUp : Unscripted show.

Phnom Penh is a city that thrives on contrast—where ancient temples meet modern nightlife, and quiet river walks lead to bustling street performances. Whether you’re here for the history, the food, or the fun, there’s always something happening. So grab your walking shoes, check out a show, and let the city surprise you.
